UX Website Redesign

In this project, we redesigned the landing page of a local museum’s website, with an emphasis on user-centered design and responsive layouts for desktop, tablet, and mobile devices. We conducted research on both the existing website and the museum’s physical space, then developed low- to high-fidelity prototypes in Figma.

I decided to redesign Virginia Tech's Perspective Gallery website. We were required to conduct in-person research and explore the physical gallery space to gain a better understanding of how to approach the redesign while keeping its location and atmosphere in mind. While walking through the gallery, I noticed the ceiling spotlights used to emphasize the artwork. Inspired by this, I took photos of the art pieces and lowered the brightness on my phone to create the effect of them being displayed in a dark room with only the spotlights illuminating them. Based on this concept, I designed the website in dark mode rather than the bright, white aesthetic commonly seen on museum websites. Drawing further inspiration from the gallery’s lighting, I created a section where users can view current artworks with a spotlight effect that highlights the piece they are viewing. I also added an "Upcoming Activities" section, which the current website does not prominently feature despite offering events and programs. Finally, I incorporated elements from the gallery’s logo, such as its colors and shapes, into the “Visit Us” section to maintain brand consistency and strengthen the overall identity of the site. Additionally, I thought it would be engaging to create a loading screen that displays the gallery’s logo before users enter the main page.
