Reference As Method

For this project, we were asked to build a working visual archive and apply it intentionally to a defined design system. The goal was to practice identifying formal, historical, and contextual qualities in design work, build a reusable reference system to inform future projects, and translate precedent research into concrete design decisions. Using curated visual references, we then created a cohesive set of deliverables (a poster, an email, and a ticket) for an event of our choice.

While browsing approved archival and critical sources, I came across a traditional Korean textile from the 1800s that was used for weddings. The pattern and color scheme caught my attention, and the idea of creating a visual system for a traditional Korean wedding felt both meaningful and visually rich, so I chose that as the focus of my event. After finalizing my archive, I noticed a lot of motifs and symbolic elements within the embroidery. I drew heavily from these references and incorporated them into my designs. For the poster, I was inspired by traditional brushstrokes and experimented with textured elements to emulate the look of hand-painted ink. I also used a red and blue border to symbolize the union of woman and man. In the email design, I added cranes, clouds, and rainbow-like motifs that appeared in my archival references. Finally, for the ticket, I integrated traditional wedding headpieces worn by both the bride and groom, along with a seal that's found on ceremonial garments.
