Health Information Toolkit
In this project, we used design as a tool for health communication and behavior change. We developed a physician-facing health information toolkit focused on one of three health conditions: Postpartum Depression, Pre-Diabetes, or Colorectal Cancer. The project centers on using design to influence a specific health behavior: increasing rates of testing and screening.
I chose to focus on Colorectal Cancer because it seemed both the most challenging and the most interesting to work with. We conducted lots of research to create accurate and meaningful content that could theoretically be used in the real world. I initially had a lot of trouble designing the logo and went through three different ideas, each with its own drawbacks. For example, one idea was to form a heart shape using two blue colon cancer ribbons, but it felt too feminine, which I wanted to avoid. Another idea involved a lightbulb with a colon shape inside, but it was difficult to recognize, so I decided to scrap that as well. In the end, I designed a different logo featuring blue ribbons arranged in a pentagon shape with a blue cross in the center. After finalizing the logo, we experimented with creating prototype toolkits using various dielines. From that experience, we developed our own dieline and selected materials to be showcased in our toolkits. My goal was to maintain a clean, trustworthy design, incorporating illustrations and icons to help simplify all the complex information for the audience.
